Coco Cozy Cafe

Kelvin Grove, Queensland, Australia

Coco was a newby in the hospitality industry when she opened her first cafe in 2004, but she knew it was something that would become her passion. In 2011, it was time for a change and Coco Cozy Cafe grew from an empty shell to the local hotspot it is today.

With a love of keeping busy and building friendships with her regulars, Coco ensures her customers always leave her cafe with a smile on their faces.

How do you separate your personal life from your life at Coco Cozy Cafe?

My husband and I like to travel to China and Malaysia 2 or 3 times a year to visit family. I also try to take 1 or 2 days off per week from the cafe to spend time with my husband. Our 2 sons have grown up now, so it is nice to be able to spend time together.

What’s your favourite ‘me time’ thing to do to relax?

Sleeping is a big priority as we are always so busy when working. My husband and I also like to take long walks along the beach when we get a chance, and I enjoy doing housework.

What nice surprises have you found in running Coco Cozy Cafe?

Becoming friends with a lot of my regular customers.

Do you have any advice for someone contemplating opening or buying a café?

Be prepared to work hard - you do need to be very hands-on. It is also very important to understand all the behind-the-scenes things that need to be done.

Do you have any funny or favourite customer stories?

Too many, we have lots of fun.

Did you put any person touches in Coco Cozy Cafe that make it unique or set it apart from others?

Personality and longevity.
