Soul Cafe

Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia

Sue and her husband Rick, the CEO of Soul Hub Newcastle, run an open-door cafe for vulnerable citizens from around the local area where they provide hot meals, vital services and a friendly chat.

Both Sue and Rick were initially inspired to get involved with Soul Cafe by their son, Luke (pictured above), who took part in one of Soul's events as a child.

Sue loves being able to make a big difference in the lives of so many people and being a part of their journey every day.

How do you separate your personal life from your life at Soul Cafe?

I have a really good balance between personal life and Soul Cafe life by separating the two with fun, rest, working in my hours of work and closing off emails/ phone when office work hours finish. I love what I do so I don’t think of work as work, but as changing people's lives.

What’s your favourite ‘me time’ thing to do?

I like hanging out with my family, camping, enjoying people, V8's, and generally anything.

What nice surprises have you found in running Soul Cafe?

We are a café for the vulnerable. My nice surprise is working with over 200 volunteers and seeing the lives of our vulnerable guests changing on their journey.

Do you have any advice for someone contemplating opening or buying a café?

Only do it if you love doing it.

What personal touches did you put into Soul Cafe that make it unique?

We treat it like a living room, everyone is welcome.

Do you have any funny or favourite guest stories?

Too many...
