Nick's first step into the hospitality industry was as a silver-service waiter in 1986 serving fancy French dishes like Chateaubriand and Crepes Suzette. When his parents converted part of their 130-acre Tamborine Mountain property into a rainforest skywalk, he and his brother joined the family business.
Upgraded and additions are always being made to the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk, so regular visits are always encouraged. The Birdwing Cafe, which is managed by Nick, is the perfect spot to sit with your family and friends to enjoy a Bondi Chai and a snack, looking out over the stunning south-east Queensland rainforest.
I think this is a really important topic and for me, I have found that living on the Gold Coast and travelling up to work keeps home and work life very separate. I still love surfing so to be able to surf in the morning and then be up working in the rainforest by day is really the best of two very different worlds.
Surfing is definitely my number one as it's just such a peaceful and calm place to be. No phones or computers just friends, conversation, and that childlike thrill I still get when riding waves.
I'm continually surprised by this property and its flora and fauna. It changes from season to season, and we are always discovering new things. Things like the beauty of the "Richmond Birdwing Butterflies" that live on the property and their complex life cycle never cease to amaze me.
In his later years of life Jack Brabham, 3-time world formula one champion, would come up with his ex-mechanic to get away from the hardships of platelet replacement therapy he was doing on the coast. He would always have a weak coffee, or a gourmet pie and then would love to walk out on the first section of the bridge. After his passing as per his wish, his wife scattered a third of his ashes from that section of the bridge. An amazing man and a wonderful friend of the Skywalk.
