The Nook Espresso

Salamander Bay, New South Wales, Australia

Lyle first broke into the hospitality industry 20 years ago as a barista in a cafe in East Maitland, New South Wales, and he's never looked back!

With all that experience, Lyle wanted to open his own space and implement all the best things he's learned along the way.

Since opening in 2018, The Nook Espresso has doubled in size and is now one of the most popular hot spots in the Bay area of Port Stephens for great espresso coffee, fantastic Bondi Chai, good food and amazing service.

How do you separate your personal life from your life at The Nook Espresso?

Well, once I finish at work I go home to three young children. Problem solved 😀

What’s your favourite ‘me time’ thing to do?

I'm a drummer, so whenever I can I'll jump behind a kit and play for a while. My other favourite "me time" activity is SLEEP.

What nice surprises have you found in running The Nook?

Definitely my customers!!! They are the best.

What not-so-nice surprises?

None so far!

Do you have any advice for someone contemplating opening or buying a café?

Only do it if you love serving people. If that's not your thing, maybe do something else.

What personal touches did you put into The Nook that make it unique?

I've been a muso for most of my life, and I wanted my cafe to feel like all the rehearsal spaces I'd been in over the decades, so I painted it all black and put rock posters on the walls.
